DOWN UNDER COLOUR
MONTENEGRO (Monte)
DAPPLE BROWNISH GREY GELDING PONY
AGE : UNKNOWN suspected to be anywhere from 18 to 30 BREED : UNKNOWN
He was not fed at all and kept out in a sandy pasture with hardly any grass and with Monte's
teeth he could not chew correctly. He was full of sand and worms (the vet said he was licking
the dirt to put something in his tummy) and he had severe diarrhea which was hanging
between his back legs in huge clumps and was pulling his hair every time he moved.
HOW ANYBODY CAN KEEP ANY ANIMAL IN THESE CONDITIONS IS BEYOND ME
Monte's previous name was Flash. We renamed him as he deserves a new beginning.
How Monte got his name: Well, I was watching a James Bond movie and Bond was travelling
through Montenegro a beautiful sophisticated old country and i knew it was the ole boys name.
And of course we plan on clipping him when the weather is warmer and he will do his own
version of the movie the Full Monty : ) So Monte is the perfect name for him.
I am sure there is a beautiful fine boned little man under all that hair and i cant wait to see him
with some weight on.
Little Monte came to Down Under Colour on February 20th 2010
We were on the look out for a little pony for our little rider.
And when we saw the condition of Monte we couldn't leave him and we had to bring him home.
When Monte arrived he was wormed with 1/2 dose of safeguard for his weight and I gave him 1
scoop of branmash with mineral oil and metamucil. For dinner that night he had 1 scoop of
soaked beet pulp. Along with a flake of Orchard hay soaked as well. He will be slowly
introduced to the right diet and the amount of feed he should have.
Monte was bran mashed every other day for a week and then after 2 weeks he was given a full
dose of Safeguard and was bran mashed every day for a week to get the dirt out his tummy.
The vet suspected because of his coat and poor condition he has Cushings disease.
I am trying the natural approach by giving him 1 teaspoon - 2 x daily of ground Chasteberries.
As well putting him on the right feeds to keep his NSC down. Triple Crown Senior is the best.
We weight taped him at 375lbs and he is 11hh.
UPDATE ON Monte April 10th 2010. Monte has only been with us only 2 months and gosh what a difference.
It only makes ALL his past owners more despicable in my eyes...ggggrrrr...
My vet Tanya Ciacciarelli has volunteered her dental services for half price and he has had 1 adjustment so far and
we wont float him again for another 3 to 6 months (depending on weight gain and at the moment he drops no feed)
Monte's teeth have never been taken care of and we don't want to adjust his jaw too much and interfere with his way
of eating. THANKS TANYA YOUR THE BEST!!!!!
John Kolody my Farrier has also volunteered his services and i am proud to call him my Friend / OLD..er.. brother
Pics below: Monte and Raylynn the perfect match.
A Special little pony for my little rider.xx
Pics below: Our little Monte finally doing the "Full Monty" he sure is a sweet happy little pony.
And we hope to have him for a very long time, and he finally has a place to call home.
